Getting to Know Roulette

Next to slots, roulette may have been the game invented for casinos. The pair always goes hand-and-hand much like a good cigar and scotch or a delicious steak and baked potato.

The appeal of roulette is the seemingly endless betting options. If you are a beginner in roulette, or on a betting budget, you may want to learn some simple rules about roulette.

The dealer will throw a small sparkling ball into a spinning wheel. It will wiz around hoping and skipping until the wheel slows and the ball slows as well. The ball will settle into a spot, but do not get your hopes too high or low right away, because it still could jump to another number when it looks certain to stop at another.

Now the good part (or bad), the payout.

The simplest, but hardest to hit, way you may bet in roulette is by betting on a definite number with odds of 35 to 1 on each number. You may also place your chip in the center of two edges of definite numbers, making your odds better, but payoff less. Odds of winning on these are 17-1.

You may also bet on a row of numbers-or three, by putting your chips on the outside line of the row with a payout of 11 to 1. Putting a chip between four numbers and one of those hit, you earn 8 to 1.

Betting on two rows would require you to place the chip on the outside line between your chosen rows with a payout of 5 to 1.

Another option is betting in a dozen, such as the 1st 12 hitting (1-12), 2nd 12 (13-24) or 3rd 12 (25-36) with a payout of 2 to 1 as is betting on one of three columns of numbers in the grid.

The most common bets for novice roulette players that allows bettors to learn the game and watch more experienced gamers is to be on the 1 to 1 games. This means if you bet $5 on one of these and hit, you receive your original chip plus another $5 chip back.

These “1 to 1” bets include place your chips on red or black which would allow you to win if you placed your chips on black and the ball landed in a black number as opposed to red. You may also wager on a high (19 to 36) or low (1 to 18) number and odds or evens.
