A Uncharacteristic Cold Florida Awaits Munnings in Mr. Prospector

Horse racing annually seeks out the warmer portions of the country while the rest of the nation is mired in cold and snow, yet when the $100,000 Mr. Prospector Handicap Grade III event is staged at Gulfstream Park, it may look and feel like a wintery day for the horses, fans and jockeys.

The track is expected to be sloppy in Hallandale, Florida with rain and temperatures in the 40’s or 50’s with even the slight possibility of snow flurries in the area when the race is run on Saturday.

Todd Pletcher-trained Munnings is the 2-1 favorite in the nine horse field. The three-year old may have been a favorite at one of the Breeders’ Cup races at Santa Anita but Pletcher’s fears over the synthetic surface lead to the scraping of the start.

Munnings won two of his six starts in 2009.

Custom for Carlos and Past the Points and the other favored horsed while Make Me Zach is the long-shot of the race at 30-1 odds.

Below are the horses in the order of their posting along with their odds as of Friday morning.
