Former Triple Crown Favorite Ready To Race Again
Going into the Triple Crown season, one horse was at the top of many pundits lists for the biggest threat to win the first Triple Crown since 1978.
That horse was Quality Road, who was pulled out of contention with just about a week to go until the Kentucky Derby back in late April when it was discovered that the colt had a quarter crack in one of his hoofs and was a problem in a couple of other legs after he began to rest and rehab.
Quality Road was victorious in the Florida Derby but has not seen action since April. His goal is to race in the Grade 2, $150,000 Amsterdam Stakes on August 3 or the Grade 2, $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes on August 1.
“Id say its going to be a tall order to make the Jim Dandy,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “The most likely scenario is if he is going to run that weekend it would be in the Amsterdam. Well just have to play it by ear. Hes got three or four more breezes between now and then.”
Quality Road trotted four furlongs in 49.72 seconds at Belmont Park on Sunday, increasing the amount of work he did on June 8 when he went three furlongs, which was his first action.
