Rachel Alexandra Stuns In Win

Nearly two months ago, Rachel Alexandra captured the imagination of the horse racing community as she destroyed the competition in the Kentucky Oaks.

That race was run one day before the Kentucky Derby and plenty of attention was shown to the speedy filly and her 20 plus length victory. This led to her being sold to owner Jess Jackson after that race. He decided to run her in the Preakness Stakes as the girl beat the boys for the first time since 1924.

The Preakness, held on May 16, was the last time we saw Rachel Alexandra dominate on the race track, but she was back to her usual self as she blew away a field of four horses to claim a victory in the Mother Goose Stakes this past Saturday.

Rachel Alexandra finished 19 ¼ lengths in front of Malibu Prayer and Flashing and ran the 1 1/8 mile race in a new record of 1:46.33.

Veteran jockey Calvin Borel rode Rachel Alexandra to victories in the Oaks and the Preakness and once again mounted her for the Mother Goose.

“Believe me, shes not normal,” jockey Calvin Borel said. “Shes unbelievable.”

Jackson was also impressed.

“I felt she could win by 10 lengths,” said Jackson. “Shes something special, one for the ages. I just hope we have more horses to fill the fields and make it more exciting.”

There was not much drama in the race, rather the drama was replaced with awe. Dont Forget Gil was scratched Saturday morning leaving just four horses to race. For that reason there was no place or show awarded.

It is unclear where Jackson will run the amazing filly next, but it appears the team is looking at either the Haskell Invitational on August 2 or the Travers on August 29, both against the boys again. Also a possibility is the Delaware Handicap coming up in just a couple of weeks, July 19.

Jackson hasnt said where hell run Rachel Alexandra next, but it appears she came out of the race in perfect health. Hes mentioned as candidates the Delaware Handicap on July 19, the Haskell Invitational on Aug. 2 and the Travers on Aug. 29 – all races against the boys.

Jackson chose not to run her against the boys again in the Belmont Stakes, so if he takes that position again, the Coaching Club American Oaks on July 25 at Belmont against the gals is a possibility.
