Saturday’s Grade 1 Cashcall A Window To Next Year’s Triple Crown

It’s the holiday season, but like every year it goes by so fast and when the holidays pass and the deep freeze and the doldrums on winter set in, it is always nice to think of the spring and with that in mind, the horse racing community is doing the same thing this weekend when the Grade 1, CashCall Futurity for a $750,000 purse is run in Hollywood Park California Saturday night.

This race often attracts two-year olds racing in their last event of the year and preparing to become one of the horses, as three-year olds, that can break the 33-year Triple Crown drought in the sport.

The race field figures to consist of eight promising young horses led by what figures to be the race’s favorite, Lookin at Lucky, coming off a second place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile race. The third-place horse of that race, Noble’s Promise, who also won the Breeders’ Futurity honor.

Clutch Player, Exfusion, Marcello, Rauschenberg, Seattle Ruler and Street Haven are slated to round out the rest of the starters for the race.

Among the horses that won, or at least participated in, this race and went on to success in the Triple Crown races was Real Quiet, who won the Kentucky Derby in 1998 after winning this race in 1997. Point Given won in 2000 and following it up with Preakness and Belmont victories in 2001. Giacomo won the Kentucky Derby in 2003 after winning the CashCall in December 2002.
