To Race Or Not To Race? That Is Zenyatta’s Question

zenyatta

Perhaps the news that she has been selected as one of only two finalists for Horse of the Year, Zenyatta has began to workout over the past few weeks and it is looking more and more likely that the six-year old filly phenom will be taking to the track again soon.

Following her big win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, her connections announced that she would be resting for the remainder of 2009 and trainer John Shirreffs even hinted that possibly Zenyatta had won her final race. The connections later reaffirmed those claims and stated that she would be bred during this coming year.

But Zenyatta has taken part in three workouts over the past six weeks at hers and her trainer’s home of Hollywood Park, yet Shirreffs has said it is nothing more than getting the gal some exercise and that the plans remain the same.

She is owned by Jerry and Ann Moss and Shirreffs insists that the decision to retire is that of the Moss’s.

“That decision is Mr. Moss, and he hasnt said anything other than what he said after the Breeders Cup,” Shirreffs said.

Still the trainer sees the clamoring to see a fine athlete take to the track again.

“I think a lot of people would like to see her run, and I would also say shes accomplished enough and let her retire,” Shirreffs added.

Her latest workout was last Wednesday, going a half-mile in 48 seconds at her home track, following similar efforts in early and late December.

Zenyatta was perfect in 14 starts and earned well over $5 million. She dominated the horse racing community during the latter half of 2009 and is matched up in the prestigious Horse of the Year award with Rachel Alexandra, a fellow filly.

The winner will be announced on January 18.
