New York Yankees vs. Seattle Mariners

ny-vs-seatle

On paper, the New York Yankees should be prepared to complete their second straight series sweep.

On paper, the Yankees (45-32) are red-hot, winners seven straight and are on the verge of sweeping the Seattle Mariners (39-38), losers of 10 straight games in the Bronx.

To keep both of those streaks intact, New York will turn to their ace, CC Sabathia (7-4, 3.55). When Sabathia left the game early in a June 21st game against the Florida Marlins, many were worried that Sabathia would find his way to the disabled list or, at the very least, be less than effective.

He showed that these worries were unfounded when he allowed one run on three hits over seven innings and struck out eight in the 9-1 New York Yankees win over their crosstown rival, Mets on Friday.

Even more on paper advantages for New York, Sabathia is 4-1 with a 1.71 ERA in his last six starts against Seattle, but faces this for the first time since May 21, 2007.

That was also the same season that the Mariners last won in the Bronx, on September 3, 2007. The losing ways in New York have countered the hot trend in which Seattle was riding, winning nine of their last 12 games to climb back into contention in the AL West and Wild Card.

To salvage a win in the series, the Mariners will turn to Jason Vargas (3-3, 3.79), making his first ever appearance against the pinstripes. Vargas has not been effective on the road, losing his last two road starts with an ERA of 11.57, including surrendering five runs in 4 2.3 innings of an 8-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.
