New York Yankees vs. Seattle Mariners
The New York Yankees look to keep track with the Boston Red Sox as they seek their sixth straight win as they face the Seattle Mariners for the first of three games beginning on Tuesday.
The Yankees (43-32) started off slow in interleague play but finished with a bang as they swept the cross-town Mets over the weekend after taking the final two of a three-game series with the Atlanta Braves earlier in the week.
After struggling a few weeks back, New York has pulled within 3 1/2 games of Boston and have matched their season-best of 11 games above the .500 mark.
The New York Yankees have been missing bits and pieces during their win streak and will be getting them back, which could mean bad news for the Mariners (39-36). Derek Jeter, Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui have all taken turns missing games after the flu bug swept through the Yankees’ clubhouse.
To keep their winning ways going, New York will turn to Joba Chamberlain (4-2, 3.81) as he seeks his second straight win after gaining one by beating Atlanta 8-4 on Wednesday. Chamberlain bounced back from some tough recent starts to hold the Braves to three runs, two earned, on seven hits.
Chamberlain has never faced Seattle, while his opponent on Tuesday, Brandon Morrow (0-3, 5.64) may have had his best career game as a starter against New York when he struck out eight over 7 2/3 innings, allowing just a run and a hit in the 3-1 win last season.
Morrow had recorded 16 saves for the Seattle Mariners from the bullpen, but has made three starts this season. He received a no-decision in his last outing when he allowed three runs on six hits over five innings of a 4-3 Mariners victory on Wednesday.
