Houston Texans vs. Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans have little chance at making the postseason after losing their first six games, but that can not stop them from winning games. The Titans go for their fourth straight victory Monday night in Houston, but for the first time the Titans can be the spoiler when facing the Texans.
The Titans (3-6) have won three straight after their shocking start to the season, though each of those wins have come against sub-.500 opponents. Tennessee can show that they are going to make a season of it by beating their first .500 or better team this season when they travel to Houston.
Since replacing Kerry Collins as starter, Vince Young has looked sharp in all three of the Titans victories, throwing just one interception and completing 71 percent of his throws, but it has been Chris Johnson that has set the pace and has already gone over the 1000 yard mark, joining just Jim Brown and Adrian Peterson as only the third back to amass that total, along with a 6.4 yards per carry average, in just nine games.
Young and the Titans return to their roots on Monday night as Young is a Houston native and the Titans, of course was a charter member of the AFL and moved to Tennessee in 1997. Young won his only appearance at home as he ran for a game-winning touchdown in overtime to give Tennessee a 26-20 win. The Titans have won five of the seven games in their former hometown.
But this is not a typical Houston Texans (5-4) team. They have their first winning record after nine games in franchise history and are looking to claim their first playoff bid ever, and the citys first appearance in the NFL playoffs since the Oilers were eliminated in the first round of the 1993 postseason.
The Texans are coming off a bye following a disappointing loss in Indianapolis on November 8 in which kicker Kris Brown missed a 42-yard field goal which would have tied the undefeated Colts as time expired.
Quarterback Matt Schaub is quietly putting together a solid season and is living in the shadow of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady as Schaub is behind them in third in passing yards this season with over 2600.
Johnson ran for 197 yards on the ground and 87 yards through the air in the high octane first game between the two teams in Tennessee, but the Houston Texans still came out on top, 34-31 behind Schaubs 357 passing yards.
