Kansas City Royals vs. Detroit Tigers

grienke

This season, no one is complaining about the lone All-Star representative from Kansas City (45-38), Zack Grienke (10-4, 2.00).

Certainly Grienke has shown some signs of being unable to keep up with the unbelievable start in which he kept his ERA around or below 1.00. He defeated the Detroit Tigers (45-38) back on May 26 to reach the pinnacle of his success this season. The 6-1 victory in Kansas City gave Greinke a 8-1 mark with a 0.84 ERA through 10 starts.

He has faltered a bit since that game, going 2-3 with a 4.00 ERA. Despite that fact, Grienke has a chance to become the first 11-game winner in the American League and still boasts the most anemic ERA in baseball.

This could spell trouble for Detroit whose lead in the AL Central has shrunk over the past couple of weeks largely due to silent bats, something Greinke can easily do.

Those bats came out in force on Tuesday as the Detroit Tigers ended a three-game losing streak and ended the Kansas City Royals three-game win streak with an 8-5 victory highlighted by three Detroit home runs from Placido Polanco (who also drove in four), Miguel Cabrera and Marcus Thames, who hit his third homer in four games.

No doubt the Tigers’ starter will be watching Grienke intently on Wednesday trying to pick up some pointers on how to not only have success in baseball, but also become an All-Star.

That starter will be Lucas French (0-0, 2.35) who will be getting his second career start. He pitched fairly well in a short major league starting debut when he allowed two runs in 4 2/3 innings of a wild game which finished hours after French hit the showers. Detroit won the game in 16 innings, 11-9 over the Minnesota Twins.

The Tigers are looking for their ninth win in the last 10 games at Comerica Park and look to win the third straight series from the Kansas City Royals this season.
