Kansas Jayhawks vs Colorado Buffaloes
The Kansas Jayhawks have climbed back to the number one spot in the rankings, but the young team knows that is usually a death knoll to teams, yet the Jayhawks probably do not care, they are just looking towards the future.
Kansas (20-1, 6-0) knows that if they just keep playing their pace and their game, they will be fine. If they happen to lose a game here or there, it does not matter much. After all it is not like the top spot in the polls is as important as it is in, say, college football.
They spent the first eight weeks of the season at number one before bowing out after a loss in Tennessee on January 10. Several teams have ascended to that spot and fallen out after losing a game the first or second game after reaching the position.
The Jayhawks are well aware that the quest for another national title, which would be their second in three years, begins in March and they can put themselves in a better position to get their by winning their Big 12 games continuing with their meeting with the conference doormat, the Colorado Buffaloes (11-10, 2-5) in Boulder.
Since the 76-68 loss to the Volunteers, the Jayhawks have won six straight wins and was able to move back into the top spot when the Kentucky Wildcats were upset last week by the South Carolina Gamecocks.
During their winning streak, Cole Aldrich has shaken off his struggles amid health issues and personal tragedies to post 14.6 points over the past five games, the last three of which he has hit double-digits.
He has been aided by Marcus Morris, who has double Aldrich’s double figure feat, doing it in six straight conference games. The sophomore is shooting 62.1 percent and scoring 17.8 points per game over that span, including 13 points, along with Aldrich’s 18, Sherron Collin’s 16 points and Brady Morningstar’s 14 points, helped the Jayhawks past their archrival Kansas State, 81-79 on Saturday night.
Colorado suffered another tough conference loss, this time to the Iowa State Cyclones in their last game, 64-64 on Saturday on the road. They hit a season-low 34.4 percent in the game and are looking to be headed for their second straight last place Big 12 finish.
The Colorado Buffaloes will be looking to snap a 13-game losing streak to the Jayhawks, including six straight losses to them in their own backyard. Kansas is 26-1 against Colorado since the start of the Big 12 in 1996-97 and their domination goes even further back then that, going 52-3 since the 1984-85 season.
