Milwaukee Brewers vs. New York Mets

The New York Mets are on the verge of being swept for a second straight series, and if they do get swept they fall into an even deeper abyss as their season is being to slip away from their grasp.

New York (37-39) has been outscored 16-9 in the first two games. While the Mets have gotten their lumber out in the series, so has the Milwaukee Brewers (42-35) who have hit .392 with 11 extra base hits in the two victories.

Milwaukee powered their way past New York’s ace, Johan Santana with a 6-3 win on Tuesday, powered by Prince Fielder’s 20th home run and Ryan Braun going 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

In addition to getting the sweep with a victory on Wednesday afternoon, the Milwaukee Brewers could win a rare season series from the Mets for the first time since 2003.

The will have a more than decent shot at accomplishing this as Yovani Gallardo (8-4, 2.86) is 4-2 with a 1.76 ERA in his last seven starts, including giving up just one run on four hits over 7 2/3 innings. Gallardo was dominant in the 5-1 win over the San Francisco Giants Friday, striking out nine and, at one point, retiring 16 straight batters.

New York finds their season sinking away from them as they posted their worst record in a single month, 9-18 in June, since a 7-19 September 2003. A loss would give the Mets their first six game losing streak since September 2005.

Teams turn to their aces to stop prolonged streaks. New York tried and failed with Santana’s loss and will hope that Mike Pelfrey (5-3, 4.67) has what it takes to stop a long losing skid, but if his last outing is any indication—it won’t.

Pelfrey allowed four runs in a 9-1 loss to the New York Mets on Friday giving the Mets their fourth loss in the last five starts by Pelfrey.
