Minnesota Vikings vs. Carolina Panthers

minnesota-vs-carolina

A few weeks back, people were talking up Brett Favre as a possible MVP candidate and then he reverted to his gunslinger mentality, throwing for three interceptions over the past two games. He, and his Minnesota Vikings, looks to get back on track against the slumping Carolina Panthers on Sunday night.

Already possessing a playoff spot, the Vikings (11-2) can clinch their second straight NFC North title, and clinch their first 12-win season since going 15-1 in 1998, as Favre looks to reclaim his solid play from the first three quarters of the season, but it will be a bit tougher if rookie Percy Harvin misses the contest.

Favre had thrown for just three interceptions through the first 11 games, but has equaled that total in the last two games. He also threw for 192 yards in the Vikings 30-10 win over the Cincinnati Bengals last week, marking the first time in nearly four months that he has not thrown for over 200 yards.

Minnesota is hoping the Favre is not wearing down like he did in his one-and-down campaign in New York in which he played terrific in helping the Jets to an 8-3 start, but could only muster one win in the final five and missed they missed the playoffs.

Harvin missed last week’s game with migraines, which may have been a factor in Favre’s diminished success and is listed as doubtful for Sunday night’s game.

The Panthers (5-8) have dropped three of four and have all but sealed their fate and clinched a disappointing season after winning the NFC South with a 12-4 record last season.

Who starts under center for Carolina will remain to be seen as starter Jake Delhomme has progressed well while recovering from a broken finger suffered three weeks ago. Delhomme has throw eight touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Matt Moore started in his stead and threw for 197 yards with a touchdown in the 20-10 road loss to the New England Patriots last Sunday.

Carolina Panthers has been held under 20 points in each of its last four games as the passing attack has been toothless and DeAngelo Williams has been limited with injuries over that span.

Minnesota leads the all-time series 5-3 and has won the last two games, both at the Metrodome. Carolina took the last game played in their home in 2005.
