New Jersey Devils vs Montreal Canadiens
For the Montreal Canadiens, the fact that they have yet to face the New Jersey Devils this year has not been a disappointment. The Devils swept the Canadiens last year, dominating on the scoreboard as well, 14-5, and New Jersey is off to their old tricks again and on a roll. They face a Montreal team both struggling to find an identity and struggling in the win-loss column.
New Jersey (22-8-1) has won five of its last six, including bouncing back from their lone loss in that streak with a 4-1 win over the visiting Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday. Zach Parise was held in check in the Flyers game, but he has been at his best when playing the Canadiens (15-16-3), scoring three goals and four assists over the past four games.
While Parise was held in check, rookie Niclas Bergfors has been stellar lately, scoring two goals in the last game and he has now amassed 11 goals, good for second in the league for rookies behind the New York Islanders’ John Tavares.
Patrik Elias tallied the other two for the New Jersey Devils as they prepare for their first game of the season against Montreal, who are looking to snap a three-game losing streak and a five game skid to New Jersey.
Each loss has been painful for Montreal as they have lost each by one goal, including a 4-3 defeat to the Buffalo Sabres at home on Monday.
On the bright side, the Canadiens have been boasting a few potent goal scores, including Andrei Kostitsyn, who recorded three points, two goals in a losing effort and Michael Cammalleri, who also added a goal and an assist against the Sabres.
Montreal’s loss on Monday dropped their record to 9-14-3 against teams at or over .500. They have gone 6-2-0 against sub-.500 squads.
