New York Jets vs. New England Patriots
The last time these teams met, the New York Jets were flying high and relishing in a rare home win over the New England Patriots. New York was hopeful they had turned the corner with their new coach, rookie quarterback who all played well in an emotion-filled game against their rivals. This time around—not so much.
Even though the Jets (4-5) are the team in a worse situation in this week’s game, it is the Patriots (6-3) who are getting the most attention.
If you went to bed last Sunday night figured the New England Patriots had their game with the Indianapolis Colts in hand, you were so wrong. The Patriots blew a late 10-point led that was decided by a controversial call by Bill Belichick to go for it on fourth and two from deep in their own territory.
Their failure to convert allowed Peyton Manning to score on an incredibly short field, giving the Colts a 35-34 victory.
It seems, though, that whenever Belichick is criticized, he steps up to the plate and delivers. It was so when prior to the 2007 season he was accused of cheating by former assistant and former Jets’ coach Eric Mangini and was given a stiff fine and a lost draft pick by the NFL.
That season his team did not lose a game until the Super Bowl.
This could be bad news for a New York Jets team already sputtering and saw themselves tumble in the standings on Thursday without even playing a game when the Miami Dolphins evened their record and moved into second place with a 24-17 win over the Carolina Panthers.
Though coach Rex Ryan and quarterback Mark Sanchez got a lot of the praise for New York’s 3-0 start, it was the defense that carried them to that start, including holding the Patriots to their fewest point total since 2006 in the 16-9 win in Giants Stadium in Week 2.
But in losing five of their last six, the defense has sagged a bit and allowed their last six opponents to score 126 yards per game on the ground. They still can turn it on at anytime as they boast the second best defense in the league.
Since his sparkling start, Sanchez has plunged to 27th in the NFL in passer rating and his offense has also toppled to their position in total offense.
The Patriots are 5-0 at home this season and are looking to avoid dropping three straight games to the Jets since losing four straight from 1999-2001, which was also the last time the Jets have swept the season series from the Patriots.
