New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Angels
Mark Teixeira finally got off the schnide and hit his first home run in a month in his last game. If his breaking out of his slump, it will be a good time as he, and his teammates, will travel to Anaheim to face the Los Angeles Angels for the final series before the All-Star break.
Teixeira figures to get plenty of boos in the stands of Angel Stadium when he sets foot on the field for the first time since he was a member of the Los Angeles Angels (46-37) last season after being traded in midseason and helped Los Angeles to post 100 wins in the regular season.
Los Angeles was ousted in the first round of the playoffs last season and the disappointment for Angels’ fans did not end there as Teixera turned down a lucrative offer to stay in Anaheim to become a New York Yankee (51-34) in the offseason.
Now Teixeira has been one of the key factors in turning the Yankees’ from missing the playoffs in 2008 to a legitimate contender in 2009, while the Angels have struggled with inconsistency with their offense, which has seen them trail the first-place Texas Rangers in the AL West.
New York arrives in Anaheim looking to extend their road winning streak to nine games after sweeping the Minnesota Twins in the Metrodome earlier this week. The Yankees 6-4 win on Thursday gave them their best streak on the road since 1998.
The New York Yankees have had their way with the Twins in recent years, including this year when they swept the seven-game season series, but could see more resistance in Angel Stadium, a place they have struggled, losing 16 of their last 22 games there, including going 1-2 there in the 2005 divisional playoff series.
Joe Saunders (8-5, 4.44) will try to cool off the Yankees as he takes the mound for the Angels. He has received a lot of run support in his last four games, which is good considering Saunders has posted a 7.59 ERA in their last four games. Saunders is 1-1 during that stretch, but Los Angeles has won three of the four games.
Joba Chamberlain (4-2, 4.04) will try to turn around New York’s woes in Anaheim when he starts after a terrible game when he allowed a career-worst eight runs on nine hits on Sunday. Only three of those runs were earned, but it was enough to send Chamberlain to the showers after 3 2/3 innings. Still, his teammates came back to win 10-8 over the Toronto Blue Jays.
