Philadelphia Eagles vs. Chicago Bears
About this time last year the Philadelphia Eagles were struggling and whenever the Philadelphia Eagles struggle, one person usually gets a target on his back, quarterback Donovan McNabb. The Eagles got on a roll and made it all the way to the NFC title game, but their uneven year has seen that target reemerge. Philadelphia will travel to Chicago to face a struggling Bears team on Sunday night.
Before the Eagles (5-4) went on their roll last year, most figured he would be excised from Philadelphia. The popular landing spot for him was considered Chicago since he is a native of the area, but that can not be a landing spot now because the Bears (4-5) have entrusted their future to Jay Cutler.
McNabb leads his Eagles into Soldier Field for a second straight season, looking to avoid the same result as last year, a 24-20 loss on September 28, 2008. They are also looking to get back on track after two straight losses, including last week’s loss to the San Diego Chargers in which the offense scored just three field goals in the game’s first three quarters.
McNabb got hot in the fourth quarter, throwing a pair of touchdown passes to clip the deficit to five points, but could not come all the way back. He threw a season-high 450 yards but was intercepted in the end zone as the game ended.
McNabb will not have Brian Westbrook in his backfield to take the pressure off of him. The Pro-Bowler suffered a second concussion in three weeks and will be sitting out this week and will be replaced by LaSean McCoy.
Perhaps the Bears are regretting giving Cutler that contract extension as his numbers have gone south following his signing. In Chicago’s last game on November 12, Cutler threw for a career-high five interceptions and could not move the Bears offense in the red zone as the San Francisco 49ers held them to a pair of field goals in the 10-6 49ers win. It was the Bears’ fourth loss in their last five games.
Chicago Bears outgained San Francisco 350-216 but sputtered when trying to score touchdowns. Cutler leads the league with 17 interceptions and had 18 all season long in Denver last year.
Cutler has been unable to rely on the potent rushing attack exhibited by the Bears last year as last year’s rookie phenom Matt Forte has struggled with just 482 yards this season after posting 1238 last year.
The Bears have won two straight in the series after being dominated by the Eagles, who won the previous five.
