San Diego Chargers vs. Denver Broncos

Certainly it looked like the Denver Broncos swooning days were behind them as they powered their way to a 6-0 start while their divisional favorites, the San Diego Chargers were wallowing in their usual early season struggles, but remarkable that can all change with a Chargers road win over the Broncos on Sunday.

Denver (6-3) is looking to avoid losing a fourth straight game while preventing San Diego (6-3) from winning their fifth straight and taking over sole possession of first place when the AFC West rivals tangle at Investco Field.

Last year, the Broncos also appeared to be in the driver’s seat of the division and just needed either one victory over their last three games or a loss by the Chargers in their last three games and neither happened.

Following the season, Denver cleaned house and fired long-time and two-time Super Bowl winning coach Mike Shanahan and later parted ways with Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler when he clashed with new coach Josh McDaniel. The Broncos also weathered an early season holdout by their best wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

All this turmoil was forgotten when the team inexplicably started 6-0, but it is all starting to resurface as the team has lost three straight games.

The San Diego Chargers have not lost since losing the home game with the Broncos 34-23 on October 19. Since then they have beaten the bad (Kansas City and Oakland) and the contenders (New York Giants and Philadelphia) to tie the Broncos for the lead following Denver’s 27-17 road loss to the Washington Redskins last Sunday.

The Broncos looked good early in the game, receiving a pair of touchdown passes from Kyle Orton. But Orton was injured during the game and may miss Sunday’s game with a sprained ankle.

If he can’t go, Chris Simms will be under center again and will look for a better performance that his 3 of 13 for 13 yards and an interception. If he does start, it will be Simms’ first start since when he was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and started a September 24, 2006 game against Carolina and sustained an injury which required the removal of his spleen.
