St Louis Blues vs. Colorado Avalanche

avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche have begun to pull themselves out of their slump by defeating a couple of the lesser teams in the league. They will have another shot at this scenario on Monday when they play host to the St. Louis Blues from the Pepsi Center.

The Avalanche (32-19-6) have been greatly improved from last year’s team which finished in the cellar of the Western Conference and rose to the lead for a spell in the Northwest Division, but a recent hot streak by their rivals Vancouver Canucks and their cold spell, losing four of their last five heading into their last game.

What Colorado needed to help cure what ailed them is a sinking Edmonton Oilers team that has plateaued at the bottom of the league. The Colorado Avalanche did what they were supposed to against a team in that situation, out shooting them 42-20 for a 3-0 blanking of the Oilers on Saturday. Wojtek Wolski scored his 17th of the season after going five games without a point.

Colorado is looking to close the gap on the road warrior Canucks who are in the midst of a 14-game Olympic induced road trip while the Avalanche will spend much of the final week before the Olympic break at home, where they are 17-8-2.

They trail the first-place Canucks by just two points.

St. Louis (25-24-9) has had a very inconsistent season and while they are a marked increase in skills over their last opponent, the Blues are a team the Avalanche should be able to beat after losing six of their last nine games, but all three of those victories have come on the road where, surprisingly St. Louis has one of the better winning percentages on the league at 16-8-4.

Their last road win was a solid one, 3-2 over the Central-leading Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday, but then lost back-to-back games in St. Louis and failed to score more than two goals for the sixth time in their last seven games.

The teams have met just once previous this season with another shutout by the Avalanche, 4-0, in the Scotts Trade Center.
