West Virginia Mountaineers vs. South Florida Bulls

The West Virginia Mountaineers were involved in an emotional game last Saturday in Morgantown when the Connecticut Huskies came in after losing their player, cornerback Jasper Howard to a stabbing death on campus on October 17. West Virginia was more than supportive as the fans cheered for U-Conn and proclaimed that they were “all Huskies today.”

In the end, though, it was West Virginia (6-1, 2-0) that kept their solid start going by coming from behind twice in the game to pull out a narrow 28-24 victory with a Noel Devine 56-yard touchdown run. It marked the second time in the last two games that the Mountaineers had to stage a comeback to win a game.

This week 20th-ranked West Virginia head to Tampa to take on the South Florida Bulls on Friday night as the Mountaineers look to remain undefeated in the Big East, and win five straight overall, while the Bulls (5-2, 1-2) look to rebound from two straight conference losses to the league’s top two teams, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.

During the Mountaineers’ four game winning streak, Devine has led the way on the group, going for 148 yards per game helping to spur the Big East’s best rushing attack. Lately, though, they have had to rely on the running game more than usual because quarterback Jarrett Brown has been slow to recover from a mild concussion and struggled at times against the Huskies on Saturday.

South Florida Bulls is in desperate need of a conference victory. Two weeks ago they were undefeated, but have been handled by the Bearcats and Panthers to the tune of a 75-31 combined score. They have allowed 403 rushing yards in those two games.

The Bulls do have a history of upsetting West Virginia’s season. The last time the teams met in Tampa, South Florida upset West Virginia, 21-13, who was then ranked number five and was one of just two losses in the 11-2 season for the Mountaineers.

South Florida is also a very good home team and is 21-6 at Raymond James Stadium since the beginning of the 2005 season and face West Virginia, who has gone on the road just twice this season and have split those games.
