Best Seat at the Blackjack Table

I have heard lots of different theories on which seats are the best to sit at the blackjack table. One would think that the situation would be individual, and the best seat could not be determined until an examination of the table was first executed. But I’ve found that your intentions are the best way to determine where to sit at a blackjack table, not the playing style of the guy in the ugly shirt next to you.
If you’re playing optimum strategy there is no best seat for you. You’re not playing with an advantage, so your odds will be the same regardless where you’re sitting. If you think that the other players’ decisions may hurt your outcomes, you can always sit in the first position, if that makes you feel any better. But in reality, without some type of edge play, it doesn’t matter a bit where you sit.
If you’re playing at a table where the dealer is a novice and is capable of exposing his hole cards, you will want to sit in the seat that gives you the best possible chance to see that card. That seat is usually the first or last seats at the table, but sometimes straight across from the dealer will be the best. It depends on how the dealer is making the mistake. You’ll have to figure out which one is best yourself. If you’re counting cards the best seat is usually at third base. It gives you an opportunity to see more cards before it’s your turn to play.
