BlackJack Table: Betting Spread

In blackjack, players who count cards look to take advantage of the cards that may be left in a deck. When they reach a count that is in their favour, they up their bet to win more money. There are also players who employ betting systems that use theory like doubling a bet after a win or loss. Both of these playing methods are a concern to the casino because they can potentially give the player an advantage. To combat these systems casinos put betting limits on their games so players are limited in what they can do.

If a table has limits of $5 to $100 the players are forced within these boundaries. That means that if you play a betting system where you double your bet after a loss, you can only do it four times before your bet will need to be more than the $100 max bet on the table for your system to operate properly. Four losses in a row in a blackjack game is not an uncommon thing, so the limits completely destroy the theory of these systems.

The limits also prevent card counters from making too much money before they’re exposed. Counting cards on a blackjack table is not illegal, but the casino will stop you from playing if they suspect you of counting. Most counters can only be successful for a short time before the casino realizes what’s going on, and the limits keep the losses to a minimum until they figure out what’s happening.

A good bet spread should be at least 1 to 10, preferably 1 to 20 like the previous example. The wider the spread the better; and it’s worth your time to try and find blackjack games that have them.
